Person with a Disability Bus Pass

Information

Who Qualifies?

Any person with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities as outlined below and due to such impairment is unable to do one or more of the following functions necessary to effectively use the City bus system's facilities without significant difficulty:

    • negotiating a flight of stairs, escalator, or ramp;
    • boarding or alighting from a City transit bus;
    • using the City Transit bus due to confusion or disorientation;
    • reading informational signs; or
    • walking more than 200 feet.

An individual may be qualified for a disabled person's bus pass after completing application requirements.


How Do I Apply?

Disabled person bus passes are issued to persons meeting one of the following
conditions:

    • if you are under age 65 and present a valid MEDICARE card issued by the Social Security Administration pursuant to title II or title XVIII of the social security act, 42 U.S.C., 401, et seq. and 42 U.S.C. 1395, et seq.; or
    • if your application is properly completed and certified by a licensed medical physician and approved by the Department of Transportation Services (DTS) staff; or
    • if your disability is readily observable.

Hours for obtaining approvals are between 7:45 a.m. and 3:45 p.m., Monday through Fridays, except Holidays.

Application forms are also available at all Satellite City Halls, TheBus pass office at 811 Middle Street, most major hospitals' social service departments, or by calling (808) 848-4444.

After approval, you may purchase your pass.


COST

If your disability has been certified by a licensed medical physician as being permanent, or you are under age 65 and present a MEDICARE card you will have the choice of a one-year bus pass for unlimited rides for a cost of $30.00 or a two-year bus-pass for unlimited rides for a cost of $60, or if you don't have one purchase a four-year Reduced Fare ID card for $10.00 and ride TheBus for one-half the adult fare or purchase a monthly pass for $5.00 each month.

If your disability has been certified as temporary, and certified by a licensed medical physician as proof of disability. You will be informed of the cost of your temporary bus pass that will be computed on a prorated basis (estimate: $ 2.50 per month).  A fee will be charged to replace lost, stolen, or damaged passes.
