If you have a cesspool or a septic tank, it provides passive wastewater treatment and disposal. The wastewater goes from your house pipes into the cesspool or tank, where solid materials settle and natural forces (mostly bacteria) break it down. The water seeps into the surrounding ground where it is filtered by the earth.
