RESPONSIBILITIES
The Department of Parks and Recreation manages, maintains, and operates all parks and recreational facilities of the city; develops and implements programs for cultural and recreational activities; and beautifies the public streets of the city. Its mission is to enhance the leisure lifestyle and quality of life for the people of Oahu through active and passive recreational opportunities.
STAFFING AND BUDGET
For Fiscal Year 2011 the Department of Parks and Recreation had 726 full time regular positions, and 1080 Personal Services Contract employees. The department's Operating Budget for FY 2012 is $59,423,882. The department manages 288 named parks on approximately 5,147 acres of land.

There is an advisory Board of Parks and Recreation of nine members who are appointed by the Mayor and are confirmed by the City Council. The Board advises the Mayor, the City Council and the Director on matters relating to recreation and cultural activities and associated facilities.
As of February 15, 2012 the current members are: Cecilia Blackfield, Li Cobian, Robert K. Cundiff, Randall N. Harakal, Pamela Bell Martin, Gary Pacarro (Vice Chair) Donald Takaki (Chair), Richard Towill, and Robert L. Vieira. |
