Emotional Abuse

Emotional Abuse, verbal abuse, or psychological abuse happens when another person intentionally tries to inflict mental suffering or emotional anguish on another person. As a result of this abuse, the victim can suffer embarrassment, humiliation, isolation and fear. Emotional abuse can be in the form of yelling, threats, destruction of property, fits of anger, and trying to publicly humiliate the victim. Emotional abuse can occur anywhere.

Signs of Possible Emotional Abuse: When to suspect someone is a victim of Emotional Abuse
  • Elder is confused

  • Elder seems frightened

  • Elder is extremely forgetful or disorientated to time and place

  • Hesitant to talk freely

  • Tells implausible/improbable stories

  • Elder is withdrawn and depressed

  • Elder is either constantly angry or goes into fits of inappropriate anger

  • Elder suffers from a very low opinion of themselves and has low-self esteem

  • Elder is constantly apologizing for their actions or trying too hard to please

An example of emotional abuse:

The adult daughter and her family are emotionally abusing her physically disabled father. They constantly tell him their lives would be better off once he is dead and they get the house to themselves. They threaten to leave him and not feed him if he cannot take better care of himself, which he is physically unable to do. The son-in-law is always making comments that he should kill the father because he is living too long.
