Honolulu ranks among the top 20 “art destinations” in the United States, according to readers of AmericanStyle magazine. (http://www.americanstyle.com)
The magazine is a quarterly publication for those interested in craft arts. Its fourth annual readers poll in its Summer 2001 edition ranked Honolulu19th among readers' favorite cities, with New York ranking number one.
Our multi-ethnic culture provides a rich offering of art both for residents and visitors, according to Mayor Jeremy Harris. As more people become aware of this, our popularity among art enthusiasts will undoubtedly increase.
“Communities such as Honolulu have become more savvy about stirring up local color and preserving old traditions,” AmericanStyle Editor Wendy Rosen wrote to Mayor Harris. “Statistics show that cultural tourists contribute almost twice as much financially to the local economy as do business travelers or vacationers with small children.”
AmericanStyle readers ranked their favorite art destination cities in the following order: 1. New York, 2. Santa Fe and Taos (New Mexico), 3. San Francisco, 4. Chicago, 5. Seattle, 6. Philadelphia, 7. Washington, D.C., 8. Asheville (North Carolina), 9. New Orleans, 10. Boston, 11. Los Angeles, 12. Pittsburgh, 13. Portland (Oregon), 14. Cape Cod, 15. Phoenix Metropolitan Area, 16. The Berkshires (Northampton and Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts), 17. Sedona (Arizona), 18. Berkeley Springs (West Virginia), 19. Honolulu, 20. New Hope (Pennsylvania), 21. Atlanta, 22. Ann Arbor, 23.
