News Releases

April 18, 2001

The intersection of Kalaheo Avenue and Kuulei Road is expected to be re- opened late today after being closed several hours for emergency repairs on a sinkhole which opened on Kalaheo Avenue on April 17 after a test drilling was done. Today the intersection will be closed for several hours for repaving.

The Department of Design and Construction reported that a three-foot diameter hole in the road was visible, but a much-larger empty cavity, about 10-by-11 feet, existed underneath.

The collapse occurred after a soil profile boring was done for a major sewer project on Kalaheo Avenue. Natural underground erosion was found to have already weakened area under the road.

Construction crews have backfilled the cavity with crushed rock. A steel plate was placed over the repair so the road could be opened to traffic last night.

Motorists will be temporarily rerouted around the affected intersection when the affected area is repaved.
