CITY INSTRUCTS BUSINESSES ON PROPER GREASE DISPOSAL 

Businesses involved directly and indirectly with food preparation are encouraged to attend a public informational meeting on the new interim policy for grease interceptor compliance. 

The Department of Environmental Services has scheduled two time slots for the informational meetings on July 24 at the McCoy Pavilion Main Auditorium at Ala Moana Beach Park. Meetings will be held from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Discussion will include the new Honolulu grease interceptor sizing criteria. 

Also encouraged to attend are property managers and owners, consultants, plumbers, realtors and any other businesses that may be affiliated with food preparation activities. 

Businesses are currently required to have a Grease Interceptor Compliance Program if their activities generate fats, oil and grease. The program is designed to prevent those substances from entering the wastewater system where they accumulate in sewer lines and cause blockages resulting in sewage backups and spills. 

The public meeting will explain the Grease Interceptor Plan Review process and compliance requirements of the city’s pretreatment program. A question-and-answer session will follow.
