Kailua residents are advised to observe detour and traffic control signs and consider alternate routes as city crews do emergency repairs on deteriorated sewer lines along Kalaheo Avenue in Kailua over the next two weeks. Up to two additional weeks of  separate but similar repairs will follow on Kailua Road.

The emergency repairs are necessary because the sewer lines are in danger of collapsing.

Work began this week on about 175 feet of severely corroded 36-inch diameter sewer line along Kalaheo Avenue between Kaiholu Place and White Sands Place. This will be followed by another two weeks of similar repairs along Kailua Road on about 190 feet of 24-inch diameter sewer line. Work on the Kailua Road section is expected to continue through the week of August 13, 2001.

The repairs will require lane closures with flagmen to direct traffic. Temporary by-pass sewer lines will be installed while a resin-soaked material is inserted into the eroding pipes to harden in place, creating new sewer lines. This method avoids the disruption normally caused when a new line is installed by digging an open trench.
