News ReleasesFebruary 15, 2001Mayor Jeremy Harris will honor four lifeguards who worked together to save a visitor who collapsed from a heart attack at Hanauma Bay on February 5, 2001. The lifeguards are Water Safety Officers Richard Buchanan, Kamalu Souza and David Parrish and acting Lieutenant Ronald Bregman. Douglass Leickner, a visitor from Canada, was revived by an automatic external defibrillator and has been released from the hospital and has returned home. He is the first person to be revived by lifeguards using the automatic defibrillator. Each lifeguard will be presented with the Mayor's Award of Excellence for his outstanding response to the emergency at a ceremony in the Mayor's office on February 16.
