MAYOR TO ANNOUNCE THE HAWAII INVITATIONAL LION DANCE COMPETITION AND LION DANCE FESTIVAL
Mayor Jeremy Harris will introduce Kung Fu Master Ho Phiew Siow and lion dance champions Fong Kong Yip and Lye Dick Hoong June 14 in the Honolulu Hale Courtyard. The lion dance champions will demonstrate their art by performing acrobatic stunts on 6-10 foot high “jongs” (steel poles). The demonstration is part of the Mayor's announcement that the Hawaii World Invitational Lion Dance Competition and Martial Arts Festival has been scheduled for October 4 - 7, 2001 in Honolulu.
Lion dancing is Asia's fastest rising sport and competitions have not been held outside of China, Malaysia or Singapore. This is the first time that the competition is being held in the United States. The City & County of Honolulu and the United Chinese Society of Hawaii are sponsoring the lion dance competition in cooperation with the Gee Yung International Martial Arts and Lion Dance Association. It will be held at the Neal Blaisdell Center and Queen Kapiolani Regional Park.
