MAYOR JEREMY HARRIS ISSUED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT SUNDAY MORNING (OCT. 7, 2001)
“At 10:20 this morning, I ordered the Oahu Emergency Operation Center at Civil Defense headquarters activated as a precautionary measure in response to today’s military action by the United States and Great Britain against military airfields and terrorists bases in the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.
“All city emergency personnel are operating at an elevated state of readiness, and we are in close communication with national defense, military intelligence and other public safety agencies.
“The events of September 11th require that all of us exercise caution and an extra measure of safety as we go about our day-to-day lives. But I wanted to reassure the residents of the City and County of Honolulu, as well as visitors to our city, that we are aware of the international situation and are taking all necessary steps to ensure public safety.”
