The city and the Department of Health, State of Hawaii, have coordinated a special “drop-off” day on Saturday, April 28, for homeowners to dispose of mercury and other hazardous household wastes.
“Recent publicity about mercury contamination has heightened interest among homeowners about disposing potentially hazardous waste stored on their properties,” said Mayor Jeremy Harris. “We want to provide an opportunity during this increased public awareness to encourage the proper disposal of these potentially hazardous materials.”
The Department of Environmental Services coordinates regular drop-off days every three months for household hazardous waste. The April 28 special drop-off day will be in addition to those that are regularly scheduled. The last drop-off day was on March 17 and the next regularly scheduled drop-off day will be in June.
For more information about hazardous materials and to schedule an appointment for the April 28 drop-off day, call the Household Hazardous Waste Information Line at 523-4474.
