March 8, 2001

The Emergency Services Department will open an Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division South Shore Operations and Training Center at Ala Moana Regional Beach Park. Dedication ceremonies will begin at 10:00 a.m. March 13, with a Hawaiian blessing followed by an open house and tour of the building and facilities. Mayor Harris, out-of-state, will be represented by Managing Director Benjamin Lee, FAIA, acting mayor.

The center is in the former food concession building at the ewa end of Ala Moana Beach Park. City crews from the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Department of Facility Maintenance renovated the building.

In addition to the Operation and Training Center, the facility will house the Ala Moana Beach Park district office and provide storage for the mobile response unit (jet-powered-rescue craft). The Honolulu Police Department's Ala Moana Bicycle Detail will also be based there.

A digital camera system for monitoring ocean conditions at Ala Moana Beach has been installed and can be viewed in the center.
