The City and County of Honolulu is reopening its waiting list to accept applications for its Section 8 housing subsidy program, Mayor Jeremy Harris announced.

Section 8 is a federally funded rental assistance program, administered by states and counties, for low-income individuals and families. The city stopped accepting applications in November 1994 because of a very long waiting list and insufficient federal funds to meet the demand. After more than four years of taking care of those waiting to be accepted into the program, the waiting list is short enough to accept new applicants.

Starting today, June 25, Section 8 applications will be available Mondays through Fridays (excluding holidays) at the Section 8 Office, 842 Bethel Street, from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Applications will also be available for pick-up only at all Satellite City Halls (listed under the Customer Services Dept.) and WorkHawaii/Oahu WorkLinks One-Stop Centers (listed under the Community Services Dept.).

In addition, applications will be accepted at the following locations from 9 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. June 25 through 29 only: Kapolei Satellite City Hall, Windward Mall Satellite City Hall, and the Gateway Plaza (on Hotel Street, between Nuuanu and Bethel Streets. look for sign).

A public notice was sent to social service agencies, organizations and businesses beginning June 22 and to community publications, including the Honolulu Advertiser, Honolulu Star-Bulletin and MidWeek.
For more information, call the Section 8 Office at 527-5974.
