FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - March 7, 2002

WASTEWATER SPILL AT KEEHI LAGOON

City officials report a possible break in a pressurized sewer line has caused a substantial spill at the Kam Pump Station at Keehi Lagoon.  City crews are currently mobilizing to divert the overflow to the Sand Island Treatment facility.  More than 14 pumper trucks are converging upon the scene to intercept the flow.

To minimize traffic congestion, motorists are advised to avoid Nimitz Highway near Lagoon Drive until further notice.

The spillage was reported at 4:30 p.m. today.  The State Department of Health has been notified of the incident and bacterial sampling for contamination has been conducted.
