FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE- February 25, 2002

The 2002 Lei Queen Contest will be held Saturday, March 2 , from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at McCoy Pavilion in Ala Moana Beach Park.

Seven contestants vying for this year’s title are Elaine Camara, Flossie Fernandez, Lorraine Higa, Irene Akiona, Lorraine Stringfellow, Queenie Freitas and Ethel Kahili.  The Lei Queen will have the honor of reigning over the traditional Lei Day festivities at Kapiolani Park on May 1.  Along with the Lei Queen, two princesses also will be selected at Saturday’s pageant.

All contestants in this year’s “Na Kupuna,” competition are 55 years of age or older.  The ladies will be judged on their lei-making ability and talent in performing the hula.

The public is invited to observe the contestants as they deftly weave leis from colorful island flowers and foliage.  Afterwards, the contestants will don their fanciest muumuu and demonstrate their mastery of the hula.
