SALT LAKE DISTRICT PARK POOL AND RECREATION CENTER OPENS
The Grand Opening and Dedication of the Salt Lake District Park Pool and Recreation center was held today at 9:45 a.m. Mayor Jeremy Harris and other dignitaries, including State Senator Donna Kim, State Representative Nathan Suzuki, Councilmember Romy Cachola, Managing Director Ben Lee, City Department Director Rae Loui and members of the Salt Lake Neighborhood Board attended the 30-minute ceremony at 1159 Ala Lilikoi Place.
Students from neighboring Salt Lake Elementary School and senior clubs from Aiea and Salt Lake joined in the festivities. Although Parks staff are still developing a working schedule, Salt Lake Elementary School Principal Duwayne Abe said his students are looking forward to using the facility. Also in attendance were former Isle Olympians Sonny Tanabe and Evelyn Kawamoto Kono, and Aliamanu Elementary School Principal Jeannie Sugimoto and Moanalua High School Principal Darrel Galera.
The $4.8 million price tag for the impressive recreation facility included a 50-meter Olympic-size pool, a second training pool, ADA accessible ramps and concrete sidewalks, concrete bleachers, pool heating system, and men’s and women’s shower/dressing/restrooms, office space, maintenance storage room, equipment room and additional storage, wrought iron fencing and lighting.
Some unique aspects of the project include intricate woodwork and skylight at hallway ceiling; racing marker anchors in pool; regulated water temperature (pool can be heated); state-of-the-art auxiliary surge recovery system for pool – the first of its kind in Hawaii; restrooms and shower/dressing rooms are fully tiled and ADA accessible; and facility has concrete bleachers for spectators with “picturesque” Aliamanu hillside as a backdrop.
This is the 20th municipal pool in Honolulu. Salt Lake District Park is the fifth city facility to boast an Olympic-size pool and the only facility with both an Olympic pool and training pool, both of which are ADA equipped.
Contractor for the project is T. Iida Contracting, Ltd and architect Edmund Chang of Anbe Aruga & Ishizu, Architects, Ltd. designed the facility.
