NEWS RELEASE Public Communications Division FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NUUANU SEWAGE SPILL CONTAINED
Roots clogging a 12-inch sewer line caused raw wastewater to leak through a crack in the line and spill into Nuuanu Stream today (May 26). The Department of Environmental Services was notified of the situation at 8:35 a.m. and responded at 9:40 a.m. The spill, located near the intersection of Country Club Road and Pali Highway in Nuuanu, was stopped once the blockage was cleared at 1:35 p.m. About 1,190 gallons of raw sewage is estimated to have spilled and entered into the adjacent stream. City crews disinfected and cleaned the affected areas and posted warning signs. The affected waters were also sampled and will be tested for contamination. The State Department of Health was notified of the incident. -30- |
