CITY CREWS RESPOND TO SEWER SPILL IN MAUNAWILI STREAM

An obstructed eight (8)-inch sewer line caused raw wastewater to overflow from a manhole and spill into Maunawili Stream today (December 21, 2002).

A Department of Environmental Services sewer maintenance crew was dispatched at 8:38 a.m. this morning to 1205 Aloha Oe Drive in Maunawili.  The spill was stopped at 10:13 a.m. after blockage was cleared from the line.

It is estimated that 3,350 gallons of raw sewage spilled and entered into Maunawili Stream.  The crew cleaned and disinfected the areas affected by the spill.

Warning signs were posted along the stream and the affected waters are being sampled and tested for contamination.  The State Department of Health has been notified of the incident.
