FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 1, 2002
SUNSET ON THE BEACH

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo Hawaiian Style this Saturday, May 4, and Sunday, May 5, at beautiful Queens Surf Beach when Sunset on the Beach continues in Waikiki.    Sunday is also traditional Boy’s Day in Hawaii, so make it a special occasion by celebrating on the beach, enjoying Hawaii’s unique trades, golden sunset, live entertainment, scrumptious food and great movies on a giant 30-foot screen.

Whether you choose to picnic on the beach or dine at tables with bright blue umbrellas  on the Kapahulu pier, choose from a wide menu selection – from chefs’ signature presentations to pizzas, hot dogs and snacks – at very special prices.   Some of Honolulu’s finest restaurants participating this weekend include newcomers Malexi’s Café, specializing in Latin and Mexican food and Hawaiian pupus, O! So Ono Diner, serving Korean and local grinds, Sweet Street Desserts, purveyors and distributors of fine deserts, cakes, breads and ice cream.  Royal Hawaiian Hot Dog, Nutty Hawaiian Seafood Village, Simply Ono Popcorn, All Star Hawaii, Pizza Hut and Beach House Cart complete this weekend’s lineup.  Restaurants begin serving from 4 p.m. as recorded Hawaiian music is played.

At 4:30 p.m. live entertainment begins, presented this week by KGMZ on Saturday and KRTR on Sunday, with the stations’ talented deejays engaging the audience with contests, prizes, laughter and merriment.   Movies begin at 7 p.m. on the big screen with picturesque Diamond Head in the backdrop.  On Saturday, watch the science fiction action thriller “Armageddon”, starring Bruce Willis and Billy Bob Thorton as they successfully save the world from an asteroid on a collision course with Earth.   On Sunday, Sunset on the Beach pays tribute to Cinco de Mayo, Mexico’s liberation day, with “The Mask of Zorro,” starring Antonio Banderos, Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta-Jones in a romantic melo-drama of honor, betrayal and revenge in a setting reminiscent of 18th century Mexico.

This week, Sunset on the Beach is sponsored by the City & County of Honolulu, Hawaii Restaurant Association, Waikiki Improvement Association, KHNL News 8, K5 The Home Team, and radio stations KGMZ and KRTR.
