Waipahu Gym and Recreation Complex Opens

A blessing ceremony was held today to officially open the Waipahu Gym and Recreation Complex at Waipahu District Park.  Mayor Jeremy Harris, elected officials and other community leaders participated in the blessing ceremony.  The gym was put to immediate use by two Waipahu basketball teams following the ceremony.

The project includes a new gym with bleachers and a boxing ring, air conditioning, a recreation building providing meeting and activity space, and staff offices.  The contractor on the $5 million complex was Allied Construction, Inc.

The original gym was built over 41 years ago as part of the Waipahu Recreation Center which included a football field, baseball and softball diamonds, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts and parking lot.

Boxing is also associated with old gym.  Andy Ganigan and Jesus Salud got their start at the boxing facility as members of the Waipahu Boxing Club.
