 WINDWARD SUNSET IN THE PARK – A THREE-DAY CELEBRATION

           By popular demand, Rediscover Oahu program, the successful food-music-movie combination that proved an immediate crowd pleaser to visitors and residents alike, returns to the Windward area this coming Friday to Sunday, October 4 to 6, at the Kailua District Park.

Under the sponsorship of the Kailua Chamber of Commerce, Windward Sunset in the Park includes the communities of Waimanalo, Kailua, Kaneohe and Kahalu’u and features live entertainment, leading restaurants with affordable menu prices, children’s games and activities, almost a 100 Windward businesses, handcrafters, artisans, and service providers and blockbuster movies on Saturday and Sunday nights.

             On Friday, Windward Sunset in the Park kicks off on Friday at 4 p.m. with a free concert and leading Windward area restaurants from Waimanalo, Kailua, Kaneohe and Kahalu’u serving their popular dishes at affordable prices.  Groups such as Ron Artis & Family, Oop’s So Facto, Na Kane Nui, Blue Shade, 41 Dash, Soul Free and King Pins will be performing until 10 p.m.  No movie will be shown Friday evening.

            On Saturday, more than 100 vendors will participate in the Windward Open Market from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.  Merchants will offer everything from toys to clothing and health care services, including massages, yoga lessons and spa products.  Entertainment begins at 12 p.m., with local entertainers Rhonda, Tea Party Parade, Allegra Performing Arts School, Windward Line Dancers, Kumuhau, Soul Free and Toa taking the stage.  Makana, who recently toured the nation with Barry Flanagan, formerly of Hapa, will headline the event with his band.  KRATER 96 radio deejays will host the day’s entertainment, engaging the audience in fun and frivolity.  

            At 7 p.m., the 30-foot big screen lights up with the “Lord of the Rings (Friendship of the Ring).”  The futuristic action adventure adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien’s best-selling fantasy epic novel becomes a dazzling cinematic experience on the giant screen. 

             On Sunday, Tiny Tadani emcees a star-studded cast of local entertainment, beginning at 12 p.m. and sharing the stage with KCCN FM100 deejays.  The outstanding entertainment lineup includes Ellen Castillo Halau, Oheo, Pali, Del Beazley, Celtic Pipes & Drums, Wiki Waki Woo, Coconut Joe, Uprising and Maohi Nui Fire Dance. 

At 7 p.m., the action-packed adventure “The Scorpion King” featuring The Rock takes you on an incredible journey through ancient times, with swordsmen and sorcerers engaged in elaborate battle scenes.  Children and adults alike will be thrilled watching former Islander and Wrestler Dwayne Johnson and Kelly Hu in this epic prequel to “The Mummy Returns.”

             Special Activities & Children Games.  Also, look for Tae Kwon Do Exhibition, art auction, Police and Fire emergency vehicles, boxing demonstration, softball hitting, inflatable rides, bungee jumps and many more children’s activities and prizes, all adding up to an exciting day for the entire family!

Great Food.  A wide variety of chef’s signature menu items at great prices will also be available – from signature dishes to favorite local snacks.  Participating restaurants and eateries include Boston’s North End Pizza, Cure Café, Down To Earth Natural Foods, East West BBQ, Family Shave Ice, Lanikai Juice Co., Maria Bonita’s, Moani’s Country Café, Paniolo Popcorn, Papa John’s Pizza, Pepper’s Place, Pizza Hut Kaneohe, Saeng’s Thai Cuisine & Otaru, Shiggy’s Delicacy, Sistah’s Ono Fried Ice Cream Co., Times Supermarket/Kailua, and Wai’ala Inc.

 Express Bus Service.  TheBus will be operating special express bus service from and to Waikiki.  On Friday, October 4, three trips will depart Waikiki at 3:00 p.m., 3:30 p.m., and 4:30 p.m.  At the end of the event, two trips will depart Kailua District Park for Waikiki at 10:15 p.m.  In Waikiki, the express buses may be caught at the Waikiki Shell Bus Stop and at Ala Moana Center (Makai Stop).

            On Saturday and Sunday, October 5 and 6, four trips will depart Waikiki at 9 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 3:00 p.m., and 3:30 p.m.  Two trips will depart Kailua District Park at 10:15 p.m.  Regular City bus fairs apply for the express bus service.  In addition, regular bus service is available on Route 57 for those who wish to leave at different times.

             Mayor Jeremy Harris commends the Windward Oahu communities for their dedication and tireless efforts to organize this event for residents, visitors and neighboring communities.  “The Rediscover Oahu’s Neighborhoods events at Kailua, Waianae, Waipahu, Pearl City/Aiea and the North Shore have been phenomenal successes in reconnecting neighborhoods, showcasing the communities’ diverse people and culture and creating new economic opportunities,” said Mayor Harris. 

             Rediscover Oahu is a city initiative designed to reconnect communities and invigorate the island economy.  Supporting organizations involved in the planning of Windward Sunset in the Park include Kailua Chamber of Commerce, Waimanalo Chamber of Commerce, Kaneohe Business Group, Ko’olau News, Honu Hawaii and the Waimanalo Construction Coalition.
