Brunch on the Beach, will be back on Kalakaua Avenue this Sunday, March 16, 2003, from 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. The very popular monthly special event transforms Kalakaua Avenue – from Kaiulani to Liliuokalani Avenue – into a fantastic outdoor café, and features an extensive brunch menu at incredibly low prices. The entertainment is the best, and it’s free.
What does it take to achieve this charming Hawaiian outdoor café? City crews will begin closing the street at 3:30 a.m., rolling out hundreds of yards of astro-turf. Next will come food station tents, the entertainment stage, over three hundred linen-covered tables, a thousand chairs, those distinctive bright blue umbrellas, a state-of-the-art sound system, plants and decorations. Hotel and restaurant chefs will start prepping and cooking at 7:30 a.m. to be ready to serve guests at 9:00 a.m. The Mayor’s Team volunteers their time. It’s a huge job time, but one that’s worth the thanks from the thousands of residents and visitors who enjoy Brunch on the Beach every month.
Hawai‘i’s finest chefs will serve signature salads, entrées, desserts, and beverages. This month, Hau Tree Lanai’s Executive Chef Ken Furuta will feature his very popular Thai Chicken Satay with Peanut Sauce, Coconut Rice and Asian Slaw ($4.00) and Carrot Cake Delight with Strawberry Sauce ($3.00). He will also introduce a brand new Coconut-Macadamia Nut Chicken with Honey, Pineapple and Mustard Sauce that’s served with Asian Slaw ($4.00).
A scrumptious Crab Hash Benedict on Brioche with Poached Egg and Lobster Sauce ($4.00) and traditional Corned Beef Hash and Egg with Corn Bread and Home Fried Potatoes ($5.00) will be featured by the Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki. Executive Chef Göran Streng will also serve his popular Pohaberry Bread Pudding with Crème Anglais ($3.00), and this month, a choice of Cappuccino or Strawberry Prince Smoothies ($2.00).
Executive Chef Chip Hawkins of the Renaissance Ilikai Waikiki will serve his fabulous Crispy Mango Stuffed French Toast with Raspberry Sauce, Scrambled Eggs, Breakfast Sausage and Steamed Rice ($6.00). He will also offer an exotic Kalua Duck Napoleon with Shredded Duck, Diced Tomatoes and Micro Greens Layered between Crunchy Won Ton, and served with Miso and Hoisin Vinaigrettes $$5.00). For dessert, a Warm Caramel Apple Cobbler with Vanilla Ice Cream will be featured ($3.00).
Seafood Village will feature a variety of dim sum “Plates” and other Chinese brunch fare starting at $5.00. The Shrimp Plate ($10.00) with tasty Pepper Salt Kahuku Shrimp and Seafood Fried Rice is a top-of-the-line item for this Hong Kong style restaurant located at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Resort.
Sansei Seafood Restaurant and Sushi Bar returns to Brunch on the Beach this month with a Hawaiian Omelet of Portuguese Sausage, Green Onions, Tomato and Cheese with a Spicy Asian Ketchup served with Sushi Rice ($6.00) and a Cheese Omelet ($5.00). Owner-Chef D.K. Kodama will also introduce two new items: Beignet and Crab, a Louisiana fritter topped with Carmalized Shallots, Asagio Cheese and Ginger Crab Relish ($6.00) and a California Temaki Hand Roll Sushi ($4.00).
For $5.00 each, guests will be able to purchase from Restaurant Fuji a choice of California Roll and Tuna Roll, a Garlic Chicken Plate or Mixed Korean Barbeque Plate, both “Plates” are served with Macaroni Salad and Steamed Rice. Restaurant Fuji will also offer Assorted Flavors of Shaved Ice ($2.00).
Duke’s Waikiki returns this month after several month’s hiatus. Chris Colgate and his crew will bring back Duke’s Famous Caesar Salad ($2.00), Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad ($4.00), and a choice of mouth-watering Grilled Big Island Pork Ribs or Chicken, served with Macaroni Salad and Rice ($4.00).
Tiki’s Grill & Bar at the Aston Waikiki Beach joins Brunch on the Beach for the first time this month. Executive Chef Fred DeAngelo will feature Island Style Paella with Slipper Lobster, Snow Crab, Chicken, Chorizo, Rock Shrimp, Bay Scallops, Clams and Mussels served over Traditional Paella Rice and Veggies ($6.00). Also on the menu is Misoyaki Salmon and Togarashi Citrus Shrimp over Nalo Greens and tossed in Passion Fruit Dressing and Chili Lemon Drizzle ($5.00). For dessert, Tiki’s will serve a Haupia Coco Puff and Mini Banana Cream Tart ($3.00 each).
Tea Chest Hawaii and Zanzabar Night Club will serve specialty beverages.
The entertainment is always the best and this month is no exception. The Royal Hawaiian Band Glee Club kicks-off the show at 9:30 a.m. with a medley of popular, Hawaiian and “Hawai`i Calls” tunes. At 10:30 a.m., Leimomi Ho and Keali’ika’apunihonua Ke’ena A’o Hula. And, at 11:15 a.m., “American Idol” star Jordan Segundo will take the stage in a cameo performance.
A hot and upcoming group, Five by 5 will have the audience rocking and rolling at 11:30 a.m. with an exciting repertoire. These five artists grew up on O`ahu as childhood friends, and typically, moved to the mainland to pursue individual careers. Last year, for various reasons, they all returned home, came together as Five by 5, and introduced their first album appropriately titled “Coming Home”.
Headlining Brunch this month will be award-winning artist Mr. Henry Kapono and his band. The recipient of multiple Nā Hōku Hanohano awards, is also the star of the City’s recycling program. One of his popular songs was written to promote recycling in our islands and is called “Got Me a Paradise”.

Brunch is held on the third Sunday of the month, except April when it is scheduled on the second Sunday. Future Brunch on the Beach dates are April 13, May 18, and June15.
