CURBSIDE RECYCLING PILOT PROJECT SET FOR MILILANI TOWN
The City & County of Honolulu will launch a curbside recycling pilot in Mililani Town starting the first week of November, Mayor Jeremy Harris announced today. The four-month project will serve 11,000 homes in the Central O‘ahu community, and data will be collected to formulate a future islandwide program.
The pilot project will test a curbside pickup program in which residents will be able to mix aluminum, plastic, glass and newspaper in one container.
City crews, using the fully automated collection system already in place, will pick up recyclables every other week and green waste on the alternating week. Regular trash pickup will continue two days a week.
Mayor Harris pointed out, “What we learn from the Mililani pilot program will guide us in the islandwide expansion, which I hope to begin in July of 2004.”
An information and instruction campaign will begin this month so that residents are prepared for the November 3 launch.
Mililani residents can use their existing gray, 96-gallon cart for all three collections—regular refuse, green waste and recyclables, since the collections will be at different times. However, any resident who prefers can request a second, 96-gallon green cart to be used for green waste and the recyclables.
City crews will deliver green wastes to Hawaiian Earth Products’ Leeward composting facility, and mixed recyclables will be delivered to any interested local, multi-material recycling facility on a rotating basis. This will allow local processors first-hand experience in handling and marketing the materials.
Residents will receive a direct-mail informational brochure shortly after October 1. Those who request delivery of an additional container will begin to receive them October 13.
