June 1, 2004

Motor vehicle license plates beginning with the letter “E” will be “retired” and replaced with new plates because many have lost their reflectivity and are a liability for citation, City Licensing Administrator Dennis Kamimura announced today.

“Many of these ‘E’ plates were issued about 14 years ago and are now almost impossible to read at night,” Kamimura explained.  “During the day, the background of the plates are dark gray, instead of white.  We are replacing these plates to prevent owners from being cited for having defaced plates.”

The replacement process will begin when license renewals are sent out during the second week of June for vehicles that have an expiration date of July 31, 2004.  The renewal will automatically include the $5.00 plate replacement fee.  Registered owners will have the choice of:

·        A new license plate with the same “E” number.  Owners must submit renewals with this request no later than 10 working days before their vehicle’s expiration date, to assure delivery of the license plate before the expiration date.

·        A new license plate issued consecutively from the regular-issued series beginning with the letter “N.”

The City will replace “F” license plates early next year.
