HONOLULU NAMED ONE OF THE BEST WALKING CITIES IN THE UNITED STATES

Honolulu has been named one of the 12 Best Walking Cities in the nation by Prevention Magazine and the American Podiatric Medical Association.  The award was announced in the magazine's April 2004 issue.  Mayor Jeremy Harris received the award from Dr. Michael Chun, President of the local APMA yesterday (April 13) in his office.

A total of 125 U.S. cities were compared before the top 12 Best Walking Cities were selected.  Criteria included air quality, low crime rates, park facilities and each city's mass transit system.  Honolulu was acknowledged for having fabulous views for walkers to enjoy, bike racks on City buses to encourage people to walk and bike.  The magazine also acknowledged Honolulu's culturally-rich downtown and a vibrant Waikiki as great places to see on foot.

Joining Honolulu in the "West" division were San Francisco and San Diego. The other 9 top walking cities were Philadelphia, Jersey City, New York, Madison (Wisconsin), Chicago, St. Louis (Missouri), Washington, D.D., San Antonio and El Paso.
