FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEMay 21, 2004 KAILUA WASTEWATER SPILL STOPPEDCity wastewater personnel have stopped a sewage spill that began yesterday morning at about 10:30 a.m.(Thursday, May 20) in Kailua at the Kukanono Wastewater Pumping Station. The spill ended at 3:25 p.m. yesterday, hours after it began, when a temporary metal clamp was placed over a leaking 10-inch pressurized sewer line at the pump station, which is located at 705 Manu Oo Street. An estimated 2,000 gallons of wastewater spilled on the pump station property and into a nearby dry section of Kawainui Marsh, which is generally inaccessible to the public. The temporary clamp allows continued use of the affected sewer line, pending a permanent repair. . State Department of Health officials were notified of the incident. Warning signs have been posted near the pumping station, and possibly affected areas will be inspected for potential public health risk. -30- |
