May 28, 2004

The recent collapse of the pool deck in front of the bleachers at the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium may have compromised the structural integrity of the historic structure.  The pool deck is an integral part of the structure that provides the diaphragm that keeps the seawalls in place.  The bleachers, bathrooms, and other interior spaces as well as the façade rest on the ground retained by the mauka seawall located at the edge to the bleachers.

While structural engineers make an assessment, the City has closed the restrooms and shower facilities.

“The closure is necessary as a precautionary move”, said Managing Director Ben Lee.  “The City must restrict access while engineers are doing the assessment”.

“Although the pool area is fenced and ‘no trespass’ signs posted, we are concerned over the safety of those who ignore the warning and trespass onto the pool deck.  HPD and DPR staff will increase efforts to stop trespassing”

“Once the assessment of the structural integrity of the memorial is completed, we will know what steps need to be taken to prevent further deterioration of this historic structure and to protect the safety of our citizens.”
