MILILANI CURBSIDE RECYCLING CONTINUES AFTER PILOT ENDS

            Mayor Jeremy Harris announced today that the Mililani curbside recycling project would continue beyond its four-month pilot phase.

“Mililani’s participation exceeded our expectations,” the Mayor said. “Over 10,000 homes in the Central Oahu community took part and provided valuable data to our survey team.”

The Department of Environmental Services will present the results of the Mililani pilot program on March 10 to the City Council. Mayor Harris said Mililani residents would now have the option to continue recycling curbside while the island wide program is formulated.

            According to research surveys conducted by phone during the pilot, 68 percent of Mililani households participated in the curbside-recycling pilot, with a plus or minus five percent margin of error.

            City crews will continue to pick up recyclables every other week and greenwaste on the alternating week in Mililani. An updated collection schedule is posted on the opala.org web site.  Regular trash pickup will continue two days a week.

Green waste and mixed recyclable pickup will alternate weekly just as it did during the pilot. Greenwaste includes grass clippings, leaves, shrub and branch cuttings. Mixed recyclables includes newspaper, corrugated cardboard boxes, aluminum cans, plastic containers with a narrow (pourable) opening and glass bottles and jars.
