FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 18, 2004 VANDALS CAUSE WASTEWATER SPILL IN MAKAKILO City Crews were called at 7:51 a.m. today (Saturday, September 18) to respond to an overflowing wastewater manhole located off Welo Street in Makakilo. The responding crew found that vandals filled a manhole with rocks, boulders and a bicycle frame, and it was overflowing into an inaccessible area of Makakilo Gulch. The spill was stopped at 8:30 p.m. tonight. An estimated 19,000 gallons of raw wastewater spilled from the manhole, overflowed into the gulch, and dissipated into the ground. No streams or surface waters were affected by the spill. The rocks, boulders and bicycle frame were removed from the manhole and the surrounding area cleaned. The State Department of Health was notified. -30-
