FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                       April 18, 2005

Release No. DCS-1

CITY, STATE OFFER WORKSHOPS FOR LANDLORDS

The City and state will hold free workshops next week for landlords and housing owners on:

·       The federally funded Section 8 rent subsidy program and how it benefits landlords as well as tenants.

·       The City’s Rehabilitation Loan Program, which offers low-interest (2 percent) loans to landlords or owners to make improvements to their rental units and rent to low-income tenants.

·       Related issues such as fair housing, accommodations for the disabled, and more.

Speakers at the 5th annual Landords/Homeowners Workshops will be experts from the City and state housing agencies. The federal Section 8 housing program aims to help low-income persons and families obtain rental housing. The program pays for a portion of the monthly rent for qualified renters.

The City and state have established a hotline – 527-5905 -- for landlords and homeowners willing to participate in the program. Their units are promptly listed with the city and state, eliminating the need for time-consuming advertising.

Participating landlords receive guaranteed monthly subsidy checks from the City or state, said Sandra Toma, chief of the Section 8 Rental Assistance Branch of the City Department of Community Services.  In addition, families referred through the Section 8 program are screened to ensure they have no history of violence, criminal or drug-related activities.

To reserve a seat at one of the workshops, call 527-5995. The workshops will be held as follows:

  • April 26 -- Kapolei Hale, 1000 Ulu ‘Ohi‘a St., 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m.
  •  April 28 -- Oahu Work Links, Dillingham Plaza, 1505 Dillingham Blvd., 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m.
  •  April 30 – Oahu Work Links, Dillingham Plaza, 1505 Dillingham Blvd., 9 to 11 a.m.
