MEMORIAL DAY LEI UPDATE
The Department of Parks and Recreation, the coordinating agency for the Mayor’s Memorial Day Service, reports that donations of lei on Oahu for the Memorial Day services has exceeded last year. An estimated 33,000 lei have been collected on Oahu from the senior centers. An estimated 24,000 lei were sent from the neighbor island schools to Oahu through the courtesy of Aloha Airlines Cargo. Lei donations are still needed to ensure that every grave is decorated.
Lei donations will continue to be accepted on Saturday, May 28, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the office of the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific and on Sunday, May 29, from 8 a.m. to noon, outside of the cemetery’s main entrance.
The city’s parks department would like to thank everyone on all islands for honoring our veterans by donating lei, especially the public schools, the graduates of Mid Pacific Institute, Waianae, Pearl City, and Nanakuli High Schools, and Aloha Airlines for transporting lei from the neighbor islands and for providing prizes and transportation for the Sew a Lei for Memorial Day Poster Contest winners.
