MAYOR ANNOUNCES PHILIPPINES INITIATIVE
Mayor Mufi Hannemann today announced he will lead a Honolulu delegation to the Philippines later this month on a five-day trip to meet with government and business leaders there.
The theme of the visit November 26-to-December 1 journey is “Pagsasamahan Ng Pilipinas at Honolulu” – Strengthening Honolulu’s ties with the Philippines.
Hannemann is accepting invitations to visit from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, whom he will meet at Malacanang Palace, and by Mayor Jose “Lito” Atienza Jr. of Manila, Honolulu’s sister city. Mayor Hannemann will meet with business groups and government officials and will inspect Manila’s light rail and metro transit systems. He will be making several presentations and speeches to chambers of commerce and other private sector organizations.
The Honolulu delegation, which includes Honolulu City Councilmen Romy Cachola and Nestor Garcia, also will meet with Ilocos Norte Governor Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Ilocos Sur Governor Chavit Singson. The Honolulu delegation will also officially sign a sister-city agreement with Vigan, Ilocus Sur; attend a fiesta in Bacarra, where he will officially crown that city’s queen, and will reaffirm Honolulu’s sister-city relationship with Laoag.
“Our purpose is to strengthen the economic, social and cultural ties between Honolulu and the Philippines,” said Hannemann. “Hawaii’s Filipino community is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the first immigration to Hawaii from the Philippines, and we’d like to invite the officials in the Philippines to Honolulu to observe and participate in that centennial as well as Haaheo No O Honolulu, the centennial of the City and County of Honolulu.”
In particular, Hannemann will invite Philippines officials and organizations to participate in a conference and trade exposition in December 2006 that Honolulu is co-sponsoring and that will culminate the year-long Filipino Centennial.
