Mayor Mufi Hannemann today announced the appointment of Wayne M. Hashiro to be director of the Department of Design and Construction.

The appointment is subject to confirmation by the Honolulu City Council.

Hashiro succeeds Tim Steinberger, an appointee of the previous administration who remained an extra month at the mayor’s request.

Hashiro, a longtime civil engineer and manager with the Army Corps of Engineers, was appointed deputy director of the Department of Design and Construction early last month.

“In that short time, Wayne demonstrated he is amply qualified to head the department,” Hannemann said.

He added, “We thank Tim Steinberger for staying on to help us through the transition.”

Hashiro is 57 years old and a native of Maui. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and has been a licensed civil engineer since 1973.

His career includes 17 years with the Corps of Engineers here, in Japan and in Norfolk, Virginia. Among the posts were environmental and civil engineer for the corps’ Pacific Ocean Division, chief of engineering for the Norfolk engineer district and deputy chief of the programs and project management division of the Hawaii engineer district.

Hashiro served as a congressional fellow for U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka in 1994-95.
