MAYOR APPOINTS MANAGING DIRECTOR, POLICY ADVISOR

            Mayor Mufi Hannemann today (February 18, 2005) announced the appointment of Honolulu radio executive Jeff J. Coelho as managing director and accounting executive John A. Zabriskie as unpaid policy advisor to the mayor.

            Coelho’s appointment is subject to confirmation by the Honolulu City Council.

            “I am pleased that Jeff and John have agreed to join my team,” said the mayor. “Each of them has a wealth of business and management skills and experience that will help me run this City in more business-like manner.”

            Coelho has been in the radio industry for more than 40 years, almost all of them in management positions, in Hawaii. He most recently was market manager and general manager of Honolulu-based Visionary Related Entertainment, which operates radio stations KUMU AM/FM, KPOI FM, KQMQ FM and KDDB FM.

            Coelho is a Honolulu native and began his career as a disc jockey with KORL radio in 1964, while he was still in high school. He is a graduate of Farrington High School.

            He went on to work at many of the top stations in Honolulu, including KPOI, KKUA and KIKI.

He was the general manager of KOFY radio in San Francisco from 1986 to 1988 before he returned to the radio market in Hawaii.

             He was elected twice to serve as president of the Hawaii Association of Broadcasters, and served two terms on the Hawaii Convention Center Authority. He is past president of the Kailua American Little League and has served on the St. John Vianney school board.

            “Jeff has impeccable management experience and terrific people skills,” said the mayor. “I look at him as a facilitator for the strong team I have assembled to tackle the problems facing our Honolulu.”

             Zabriskie was also born and raised in Honolulu. He is a graduate of Kalani High School and earned degrees from Pepperdine University (bachelor’s in business administration in accounting) and the University of Southern California (master’s in business administration in finance). 

            Zabriskie is a certified public accountant and worked from 1980 to 2004 for KPMG (Peat Marwick) in San Francisco, Hong Kong, Guam and Honolulu.

            He became an audit partner with KPMG in 1990. Since then, he has served as partner in charge of KPMG’s manufacturing and distribution practice, and the firm’s total quality management program. Before he retired last year, he headed KPMG’s transportation, manufacturing and consumer markets audit group.

            Zabriskie has served on the board of directors and executive committee of the Better Business Bureau of Hawaii and the board of Child and Family Services. He was a founding member of the Honolulu Sunrise Rotary Club.

            He is also serving as the deputy to Paul Yonamine, the mayor’s unpaid senior advisor, in leading the Mayor’s Review, the comprehensive management audit of city operations being conducted by a blue-ribbon panel of business and community leaders.
