MEMORIAL DAY POSTER CONTEST WINNERS Mayor Mufi Hannemann presented awards to the winners of the Student “Sew a Lei for Memorial Day” Poster Contest today (Wednesday, May 11) in his office. The winning posters are exhibited on the third floor of Honolulu Hale through May 31. The winners were chosen from more than 602 entries from public and private schools throughout the state. The contest judges were Ron Mizutani, Carolyn Nakamura and Dr. Gary Saito. The artwork of the first-place winners will appear on posters encouraging the public to provide lei to decorate graves at the National Cemetery of the Pacific for the Memorial Day Service. Fifty thousand lei are needed for placement on the graves of veterans, in memory of their service to our country, at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl, and at all State Veteran’s cemeteries for Memorial Day. The lei are needed on Friday, May 27, and can be dropped off at designated community parks and fire stations on Oahu, the Parks Permit Office in Honolulu, and at Kapolei Hale Room 309. Loose plumeria flower will also be accepted on Thursday, May 26 at the same locations. For information about donating lei, please call 692-5106. All lei must be made of fresh flowers or ti leaves and must measure 20-24 inches before tying (lei must be tied). Floral sprays such as ti leaf and anthurium bouquets are also welcome. Lei donations can be dropped off on Friday, May 27, and loose plumeria on Thursday, May 26, at the following locations: Community Parks (9:00 am - 11:30 am.) The Mayor’s Memorial Day Service will be held on Monday, May 30, at 8:30 a.m. at the National Memorial of the Pacific. The public is encouraged to use the shuttle bus because parking at the Cemetery is very limited. Shuttle buses will operate from the Alapai Express Bus Terminal from 7:15 a.m. to 8 a.m. Regular bus fares will prevail. Parking at the Civic Center Parking Lot will be free.
