The Department of Parks and Recreation invites the public to its annual Lei Queen Selection Contest at McCoy Pavilion on March 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The 2006 Lei Queen and princesses will be crowned at the City’s 79th Annual Lei Day Celebration on May 1 at Queen Kapi'olani Park.  The entertaining event celebrates Hawaiian culture, and features live music and an open hula period as the scores are being finalized.  Admission is free.

Contestants will be judged first on their knowledge and skills in the art of lei making and Hawaiian language, poise and personality, and their hula skills.  The age group for this year’s contestants is Nâ Wahine 'Ôpio – 18 - 30 years of age.

          Contest judges are Randy Healoha Akau of Pleasant Holidays; Macey Hoakalei Hina Kamau'u, former Lei Queen (2004) and Kumu Hula of Hâlau Hula ‘o Hoakalei, and Hanalei Ramirez of Salon 808.

The theme for this year’s Lei Day Celebration is Nâ Lei Mâlamalama o Nâ Kai 'Ewalu – the Illuminating Lei of the Eight Seas.  The Queen and her court will preside over the May 1 festivities, which will feature the famous lei contest, music and hula performances, and craft demonstrations.
