MAYOR DEDICATES WAIALAE KAHALA BICYCLE STAGING AREA

Mayor Mufi Hannemann today (July 26, at 9:30 a.m.) joins representatives of Kapiolani Community College and the bicycling community in dedicating the Waialae Kahala bicycle staging area.

Located next to the Kapiolani Community College chapel on Diamond Head Road, the facility includes a comfort station, changing area, bicycle racks, landscaping, an outdoor table, benches, and a fitness court with exercise stations.  The land was provided by the University of Hawaii.

Mayor Hannemann said, “The City is pleased to offer these improved facilities to cyclists.  The availability of a comfort station and staging area will, we hope, encourage and support more bicycling by Kapiolani Community College students, neighborhood riders, and the bicycling community.”

The project was completed in two phases.  Phase I encompassed the bulk of improvements, including construction of the comfort station.  Work began in November 2004 and was completed this month at a cost of $604,300.  Phase II consisted of building the fitness court.  This latter phase took place between July 2005 and February 2006, at a cost of $94,900.  Site Engineering was the contractor for the entire project.

Reasons for improvements: Bikers wanted a place to stage recreational rides, bikers needed a comfort station at the staging area, commuter service for KCC

Phase II (Fitness Court)

Cost:  $94,900

Time to complete the work:  60 calendar days

Notice to Proceed:  July 18, 2005

Completion Date:  September 15, 2005

Actual Completion Date:  February 2006
