MAYOR SCHEDULES WORKING SESSION

AT POKAI BAY ON AUG. 5

            Mayor Mufi Hannemann and his cabinet will join members of the Waianae community on Saturday, August 5, 2006, for a working gathering as the City begins its cleanup of beach parks on the Leeward Oahu coast.

            Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. at Pokai Bay Park, adjacent to Waianae District Park.  Volunteers will work through the morning and then the mayor and his cabinet will be available to talk story at Pokai Bay at lunchtime. Other parks scheduled to receive attention that morning include Tracks and Lualualei beach parks and Maili Point.

            What’s being billed as Na Hoaloha O Waianae Beach Park Cleanup Day is a prelude to the heavy maintenance the City will be performing on its Waianae Coast parks. Waianae District Park is scheduled for work next.  

            “Rather than just hold a meeting, we are joining the Waianae community to plan and actually begin the work of sprucing up the parks,” said Mayor Hannemann. “We’ll be removing trash, painting and cleaning up the parks.

            “These parks are an important part of our Oahu, our home. As I have said so many times before, we all want our City beaches to be accessible, clean, and well-kept, to reflect the beauty of our island and our responsibility as stewards of these public facilities.”

            Persons interested in helping should report to the Aloha Tent at Pokai Bay before 8 a.m. on August 5.

            Some preparatory work will actually take place at the park earlier in the week.

            In addition, this Saturday, July 29, the mayor will deliver remarks at the 9 a.m. dedication of the Pokai Bay Canoe Halau, a long-awaited project begun several years ago.
