MAYOR TO INSPECT TRANSIT SYSTEMS IN PORTLAND AND SAN DIEGO
AND MEET WITH FILM INDUSTRY EXECUTIVES
Mayor Mufi Hannemann will lead a delegation from Honolulu to inspect the transit systems in the cities of Portland, Ore., and San Diego, Calif., next week.
The Honolulu group will include City Transportation Services Director Melvin Kaku; David Tanoue, deputy director of the Department of Planning and Permitting, and City Councilmen Nestor Garcia and Rod Tam. More than visiting the rail systems in Portland and San Diego, the group will examine how city planners used those systems to produce transit-oriented development in their communities and surrounding business and university areas.
Later in the week, Mayor Hannemann and Honolulu Film Commissioner Walea Constantinau will visit Los Angeles for meetings with executives from ABC/Touchstone Television, Walt Disney Pictures, Warner Bros. and Universal Studios to discuss Hawaii’s new tax incentives and encourage more Hawaii-based productions.
Next weekend, Mayor Hannemann will take personal leave from his official job to assist Dana Takahara-Dias, deputy director of Parks and Recreation, in coaching Team Aloha, the all-star high school girls basketball team from Hawaii, in the Nike Storm/Swish Invitational Tournament at Santa Barbara, Calif. Team Aloha will compete against 23 teams from California, Arizona and Colorado with numerous college scouts in attendance. The trip was established this year by Hannemann, who has sponsored the annual Basketball Jamboree for Hawaii’s top female basketball players for the past 13 years. The team’s tournament appearance is being sponsored by the Hawaii High School Athletics Association.
The mayor leaves Honolulu on Sunday, September 24, and returns to work on October 2. In his absence, Managing Director Wayne Hashiro will serve as acting mayor.
