MEMORIAL DAY POSTER CONTEST OPEN TO HOME-SCHOOLED STUDENTS
All Hawaii public, private and home-schooled students from kindergarten through high school are invited to enter the “Sew A Lei For Memorial Day” Poster Contest. The winning posters will be used to encourage lei donations from the public to decorate graves at the National Cemetery of the Pacific and at all state veterans’ cemeteries for Memorial Day. The top poster in each of three age groups will be reproduced and distributed statewide. Fifty thousand lei are needed. The annual Mayor’s Memorial Day Service will be held on Monday, May 29, at 8:30 a.m. at the
First, second and third place winners will be selected in three categories (grades K-4, 5-8, and 9-12) by a panel of judges. Mayor Mufi Hannemann will honor the winners on May 10. Winning entries will be displayed at Honolulu Hale from May 1 through 31.
Hawaii’s public schools will submit entries through their district offices to the Department of Education Communication Branch. Private and home schools should submit artwork by March 6 to the Department of Parks and Recreation, Kapolei Hale, 1000 Uluohia Street, Suite 309.
