MAYOR'S MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE - MONDAY, MAY 29
Mayor Mufi Hannemann will deliver the keynote address at the Annual Mayor's Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 29 at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Puowaina (Punchbowl) Crater. The ceremonies begin at 8:30 a.m.
Mayor Hannemann, U.S. Representatives Neil Abercrombie and Ed Case, and Brigadier General Vern T. Miyagi, U.S. Pacific Command, will place memorial wreaths at the cemetery's Dedicatory Stone. Law Enforcement Explorer Lt. Jessie Manufekai, Boy Scout Shafer Pacada and Girl Scout Tate Kaneshige will assist them.
Junior ROTC cadets from Aiea, Campbell and Roosevelt high schools will post the 50 State flags. The Joint Military Color Guard will post the national colors and numerous veterans' organizations will present wreaths and colors.
A detachment from Hickam Air Force Honor Guard will fire the 21-gun rifle salute and four Hawaii Air National Guard 199th Squadron fighter jets will fly the "Missing Man" formation over the cemetery.
Mike Buck will serve as master of ceremonies. The Honolulu Boy Choir, Tradewinds and the Royal Hawaiian Band will perform for the event.
Parking at the cemetery is very limited. Those attending the event are encouraged to use the round-trip shuttle buses that will operate from the Alapai Express Bus Terminal (at the corner of South King and Alapai streets), starting at 7:15 a.m. The last bus leaves at 8:15 a.m. Parking will be free at the lot. Destination signs on the buses will read "Special Punchbowl Cemetery." Regular fares of $2/adult and $1/youth (grades 1- 12) will prevail, monthly adult and youth passes will be accepted, and elderly and disabled passes will be honored.
Those who drive to the cemetery are encouraged to de-activate their car alarms to prevent disruption of the solemn service. For information, call the Department of Parks and Recreation at 692-5725.
