FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                   June 27, 2006

Workers from the Department of Environment Services responded this afternoon to a spill of an estimated 1,905 gallons of untreated wastewater from a sewer line on Kapolei Parkway near Kalaeloa Boulevard.

Wastewater was reported overflowing from three manholes on Kalaeloa at 1:15 p.m.

City workers found an underground 10-inch pipe partially blocked by a grease build-up and cleared it by 2:45 p.m.

Some of the spilled wastewater entered a nearby drainage canal and storm drain system, where it was confined. City crews removed the spilled wastewater and disinfected the area. Warning signs are being posted along the canal and the public is advised to avoid the area. The state Department of Health has been notified.
