FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                 October 13, 2006

“The Department of Planning and Permitting has granted tentative approval to the Kuilima Resort Company’s subdivision application.

“This is a tentative approval that is just one step in the typical review process, which includes establishing the lots and easements that are needed for the project and that were contemplated by the prior project approvals and the unilateral agreement.  This tentative approval was granted only after a thorough examination of the impact of the proposal, and the applicant must respond to the City’s remaining concerns and recommendations before final approval is given.

“I am personally opposed to Kuilima’s original expansion proposal, as announced publicly earlier this year and unveiled to the community.  I have expressed my concerns to the company’s new chief executive officer, and have been encouraged that the firm has been very open to my suggestions.  I am strongly urging Kuilima to continue to pay careful attention to the concerns expressed by North Shore residents and others.

“That said, the public needs to be aware that under our planning and zoning laws, any property owner, including the Kuilima Resort Company, is entitled to orderly processing of permit or subdivision applications.  At all times, the Department of Planning and Permitting must abide by applicable laws and monitor compliance with the conditions of the original land use approvals obtained 20 years ago.”
