The City announces

Wifi on TheBus Pilot Project

Honolulu, Hawaii, April 3, 2006 – The City and County of Honolulu today began a five-week pilot project, which will test the feasibility of providing wireless Internet connectivity (WiFi – wireless fidelity) on TheBus.

“We hope that this will be yet another way to make the bus riders’ commute a more productive one.  People will have the ability to check email, surf the web, stream video, get more work done or just plan their day,” said Mayor Mufi Hannemann.  “We also believe that by providing WiFi service on the bus, more people will consider using our excellent mode of public transportation.”

Ten eTransit hybrid buses have been outfitted with Sprint EVDO wireless technology.  The Route A: CityExpress!, which runs from Waipahu to the University of Hawaii is the exclusive route that will provide the FREE service, from April 3 – May 5th.

Honolulu is not the first City to explore WiFi on public transit.  In fact many cities on the mainland have had or are now conducting their own pilot programs, ” said Department of Transportation Services’ James Burke.

Sprint Hawaii initially approached the City to see if a pilot project could be explored.  If the project proves successful, the City may consider expanding the program to other bus routes.  A competitive bid process would then be required to select the vendor.
