MAYOR’S TEAM TO SPIFF UP

WAIANAE COAST PARKS SATURDAY

Mayor Mufi Hannemann’s cleanup of Waianae Coast beach parks on Saturday, August 5, 2006, has drawn an overwhelming response.

More than 250 people have volunteered to participate in the effort, which begins at 7:30 a.m. with registration at Pokai Bay Park. The volunteers will deploy to Kahe Beach Park, Tracks Beach Park, Lualualei Beach Park and Maili Point and work through the morning. They will be picking up trash, painting and cleaning the facilities and grounds.

The cleanup follows on the heels of last Saturday’s dedication of the Pokai Bay Canoe Halau.

“In addition to members of my cabinet and staff, we’ve had terrific response from community groups,” said Mayor Hannemann. “That will allow us to do even more than we initially planned. We’ll also make ourselves available after the cleanup work to have a ‘talk story’ session with the community.”

Na Hoaloha O Waianae Beach Park Cleanup Day is a prelude to the heavy maintenance the City will be performing on its Waianae Coast parks. Waianae District Park is scheduled for work next.

Persons interested in helping should call Dana Takahara-Dias, deputy director of the city Department of Parks and Recreation, at 692-5585 by Friday.
