FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                             September 13, 2006

The City will close the parking lot at the Waikiki Natatorium next week to complete repairs to the facility.

City masons today removed and patched a badly cracked area on the top of the rear fašade wall on the Diamond Head-mauka corner of the bleachers.  The cracking was caused by the corrosion of steel reinforcing bars in the concrete.  The removal was necessary to protect the public from falling debris.

Two areas in the Ewa bleacher wall also must be removed.  The repairs will require the closure of the parking lot in the Ewa courtyard of the Natatorium for five days, beginning Monday, September 18.  The damaged areas are directly over the driveway to the parking lot.

Notices will be posted on Sunday, September 17, alerting beachgoers of the closure. The parking lot will be reopened as soon as the repairs are completed.  Masons from the Department of Parks and Recreation will be doing the work.

The work is to address public safety concerns, not structural problems.
