CITY’S 2008 EVERYDAY ENVIRONMENTAL HERO CALENDARS

TO BE AVAILABLE FREE TO THE PUBLIC STARTING DECEMBER 3, 2007

Mayor Mufi Hannemann and the Storm Water Quality Branch of the City Department of Environmental Services, Division of Environmental Quality, are proud to announce the 2008 Everyday Environmental Hero calendar, in cooperation with the Hawaii Department of Transportation Highways Division.

The 11-inch by 17-inch calendar features a stunning illustration by local artist Michael Furuya that incorporates the ahupua`a concept of managing storm water as it flows from the mountain to the sea.

Also on the calendar are photos promoting the positive roles that local everyday environmental heroes can play in building awareness and changes in behavior to prevent water pollution.

Iwalani Sato, Storm Water Public Education and Outreach coordinator, said, “The sustainability of our island home rests in the hands of all citizens who are everyday environmental heroes, especially those who share their knowledge and take specific action to minimize polluted runoff.  By calling attention to positive actions, we hope to show more people what they can do to protect our waters ... for life.”

The calendars will be available starting December 3, 2007, at all Satellite City Halls, City departments, DOT Highways at 727 Kakoi Street, and the City Storm Water Quality Branch booth at the Building Industry Association Home Building and Remodeling Show, January 24 to 27, 2008, at the Neal S. Blaisdell Exhibition Hall, while supplies last.

Winners of the 2008 Everyday Environmental Hero Photo Essay Contest will be in the 2009 calendar.  Please visit www.cleanwaterhonolulu.com to learn more about the photo essay contest.
