            Kauai Mayor Bryan J. Baptiste and Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann today announced the establishment of the Mayors’ Challenge Cup, an amateur golf tournament featuring teams from each county competing on public links courses.

            The inaugural Challenge Cup will be held at the Ala Wai Golf Course, November 10-11, 2007.  The event will be funded by private sponsors.

            Mayor Baptiste said, “This is a great opportunity for our outstanding Kauai golfers to showcase their talents, as well as build friendships with our neighbors from Oahu who share an interest in this sport.  We’re very pleased to be a part of this inaugural tournament, and look forward to welcoming the golfers to our Wailua Municipal Golf Course next year.”

            Mayor Hannemann said, “The Mayors’ Challenge Cup will feature top golfers from Oahu and the Garden Isle competing to bring home the champion’s prize.  We’re delighted to kick off the tournament with Mayor Baptiste and look forward to an exciting competition this year.”

            Each mayor will field a 12-member team of nine men and three women who are residents of his respective county.  The men’s competition will consist of three divisions: (a) open;

(b) seniors, for golfers 50 and older; and (c) super seniors, for golfers 60 and older.  The women’s competition will consist of three flights, based on handicap.

            The county teams will be selected through a qualifying competition held on municipal courses on Kauai and Oahu.  Kauai’s qualifying event will be held during a qualifying period from September 28 to October 14 at the Wailua Municipal Golf Course.  Oahu’s team will qualify October 6 and 7 at the Ala Wai Golf Course.

            Golfers interested in participating may attend any of three informational meetings about the Challenge Cup:  Tuesday, August 21, Ala Wai Golf Course, 7:30 p.m.; Tuesday, August 28, Pali Golf Course, 7:30 p.m.; and Tuesday, September 4, Ted Makalena Golf Course, 7:30 p.m.
