2007 OAHU JUNIOR LIFEGUARD CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2007 Oahu Junior Lifeguard Championships will be held this Saturday, July 21, 2007, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, at Ala Moana Beach Park. More than 150 junior lifeguards from this year’s four program sites on Oahu will be competing in five events during the day: 1,000 meter beach run, beach flags, run-swim-run, paddleboard relay and a 200 meter swim.
The winners of each event will then form a team to represent Oahu at the 2007 State Junior Lifeguard Championships to be held on July 28, 2007 at Hapuna Beach Park on the Island of Hawaii. The team from Oahu as well as those from the neighbor islands will be showcasing skills learned during the summer program, and competing in individual and team events in two age divisions, 13-14 and 15-17.
“I think the popularity and success of the City’s Junior Lifeguard Program speaks for itself,“ said Honolulu Emergency Services Department Director Elizabeth Char, M.D. “For over 15 years this program has not only been teaching the teens of Oahu about ocean safety but has also been giving them a safe and productive way to spend their summer.”
The City and County of Honolulu’s Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division conducts the Junior Lifeguard Program with support from the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association. The competition will be held at the Ewa end of Ala Moana Beach Park. There is no charge for the event. The public is invited to attend.
The Honolulu Emergency Services Department consists of the Emergency Medical Services Division, which provides ambulance services on Oahu, and the Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division, whose water safety officers protect beachgoers on Oahu’s beaches.
